A few years ago, while on retreat with other recently ordained clergy, we were asked to create a ‘rule of life’. I instantly pushed back against the sound of ‘rule’ which felt restrictive, forced, and inorganic. A ‘rhythm of life’ in contrast, felt more organic and authentic to who I am and where I live near the ocean in Maine. My life is influenced by rhythms of seasons, tides, the sun, and the moon.
The lights in the sky captivate my attention and beckon me to paint them. They dwell in harmony and tension with one another and the darkness which they illuminate. They radiate Spirit as many a poet does attest.
Sometimes there is hidden knowledge in a painting and I often don’t understand what the image is trying to convey to me until I’ve had time to sit with it and reflect. This is most definitely the case with The Path. Originally painted in my Brattleboro, VT studio/gallery on the corner of Elliot and Main, I later realized that the path I was being called to embark upon was that of ordained ministry. The way through was not a clearly defined route but one of mystery and ambiguity, without guarantee. I think I am always seeking the light where the color refracts into rainbow streams.
